the curriculum
The specialist curriculum at Heathermount
is designed to address the needs of Learners with autism.
Individuals within the range of autistic spectrum
disorders differ greatly, but they all share a common cluster
of underlying difficulties with social interaction, communication
and lack of flexibility of thought.
This is demonstrated through
obsessive compulsive behaviours. Some children may also experience
additional motor co-ordination and organisational problems.
At Heathermount, we emphasise body awareness,
personal and social education and vocational training to enhance
skills in the key areas of impairment.
Our approach includes the use of social drama,
teaching graded thinking and process based instruction, and
a system of personal tutoring and counselling.
