Phil Packer walking London Marathon in aid of The Disabilities Trust with service user David Ross

Phil Packer walks the London Marathon in aid of the Disabilities Trust

On the 25th – 26th April 2010, BBC sports personality, Phil Packer will be attempting to walk the 26 miles of the London Marathon for 26 charities, in 26 hours. Phil will be completing a mile for each one of his 26 chosen charities and The Disabilities Trust is very proud to announce that Phil will be completing mile 12, on their behalf.

Phil will be completing mile 12 with support walker David Ross (below). David is 21 and from Leeds, he was admitted to Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust (BIRT) service, Daniel Yorath House, in 2007 - having suffered a severe head injury in a road traffic accident. Since then David has made great progress and now lives in community supported housing in Leeds.

“I often walk for 1 or 2 miles a day. I am really looking forward to the London Marathon and I would like to say thank you to Phil Packer for the opportunity to do this. I am really happy to have the chance to tell everyone about the great work that was done for me at Daniel Yorath House in Leeds and also at the Community Supported House I live at now.”

The Disabilities Trust provides care and support services for those with Physical Disabilities, Autism, Acquired Brain Injury and Learning Difficulties. With support centres across the UK, the Trust endeavours to provide quality care provision and support. This is done by providing facilities for our service users to lead independent and fulfilling lives. The Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust (BIRT) is a Division of the Disabilities Trust and the means by which they provide their brain injury services.

Last year Phil, who received severe spinal injuries whilst serving in Iraq, inspired millions with his phenomenal fundraising challenges and gained unexpected national recognition including Fundraiser of the Year at the Pride of Britain Awards and the Helen Rollason Award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. This year Phil hopes to be doing it again and helping even more charities, such as The Disabilities Trust.

David was over the moon that he had been picked to support Phil for the mile and even joked that 1 mile just wasn’t enough! Fortunately David will be not be disappointed as he will also be taking part in the final mile on Monday 26th April as Phil crosses the marathon finish line with all the support walkers from all the 26 charities.
