World Autism Awareness Day 2010

Friday 2nd April is World Autism Awareness Day

The Disabilities Trust is working together with other autism charities and service providers to bring World Autism Awareness Day to the attention of as many people as possible and encouraging people to Stand up for Autism.

By bringing together autism organisations all around the world, we will give a voice to the millions of individuals worldwide who are undiagnosed, misunderstood and looking for help.

A central website has been set up to celebrate World Autism Awareness Day. Here you will find a photo gallery where you can add your picture and a short message to show your support. Stand Up for Autism. Visit www.waad.org.uk to view the photo gallery, upload your own picutre and message or find out more about World Autism Awareness Day.

Aims of World Autism Awareness Day

The United Nations has declared 2nd April World Autism Awareness Day. Earlier in the year the Government recognised autism spectrum disorders as distinct from other conditions, deserving urgent strategic planning, policy development and dedicated resource allocation. Research suggests that autism is costing the UK £27.5 billion pounds a year - a cost which could be vastly reduced by providing the right support for those with autism. A significant proportion of this is the result of lost earnings by adults with autism, so it is not just an issue of cost but of missed opportunity. .

One in a hundred people have Autism, yet the services and support available to them and their carers are woefully inadequate. All too often autism is not properly understood as a distinct condition and the needs of people affected by Autism are not recognised.

We have been be carrying out activity in the lead up to World Autism Awareness Day to get this message across and call on all interested parties to take action and to Stand Up for Autism.
