Shinewater Court is a purpose built residential centre in Sussex for
people with physical disabilities run by The Disabilities Trust.
Built on a quadrangle enclosing a sunny, private
garden and courtyard, Shinewater Court provides specialist
accommodation for 30 adults with physical disabilities. In
addition to the residential centre, there are 15 sheltered
flats.

We tailor our services to the individual. We respect privacy and
recognise the right to choice, dignity, independence and fulfilment.
Exciting new development. The Disabilities Trust is purchasing back private flats at Shinewater Court, offering existing service users the opportunity to live more independently in flats attached to the main unit. Therefore vacancies will arise at Shinewater Court in the near future. Enquiries are welcome from single or joint applicants.

our facilities
Accommodation includes 21 single and three double bedsits,
each with en-suite facilities and adapted for the needs of individual service
users, including hoists.
In addition to the residential accommodation, there are
15 sheltered flats, some of which have been registered for clients looking towards
living independently. All rooms have a Tunstall intercom call system.

catering
All meals are served in the main dining room. There is
a wide choice of menu and special diets are catered for. The catering manager
meets regularly with service users to discuss menu planning.

entertainment
The bar is open on a regular basis and is run by volunteers.
A committee of staff and Service Users meet regularly to discuss and organise
various entertainments, including parties, bands and discos, to which guest
and families are always welcome.
Our communal lounge has Sky digital TV and music centre.
All rooms have a TV aerial socket and Sky digital TV is available throughout.
Telephone sockets are available in all accommodation and
a payphone is situated in a private telephone room.

activities
The well-equipped activity centre is run by two co-ordinators
and offers a varied range of activities.
Classes held on-site include arts and crafts, computer skills
and cookery. Classes at the local college include drama, environmental issues,
literacy and numeracy, and music.
Service user can participate in the arranged activities
or pursue their own interests, supported by the co-ordinators. We also run programmes
tailored to the individual, including daily living skill such as menu planning,
healthy eating, cookery, household budgeting and laundry.
There are regular trips to libraries, shops, theatres and
the seafront, plus help with holiday bookings and arrangements.
Extra activities include greyhound racing at Hove, stock
car racing at Arlington Stadium, trips to London theatres, the Brighton Ice
Show, concerts at the Brighton Centre, the Boat Show, London Eye, and the Eastbourne
Airborne Show.
There are needlework and gardening activities and access
to craft work every afternoon – including paint, collage, clay and rug making.
Volunteers are available most days to assist with escorting,
driving, letter writing, shopping etc.
Numerous contacts exist with churches and other organisations
in the community.

health services
Physiotherapy and occupational therapy are available on
a regular basis. Each service user negotiates times with the therapist concerned.
A chiropodist visits the unit every six weeks.
The health centre is 100 yards from the project, with full
wheelchair access.
Services available include GPs, chiropody, district nurses,
various clinics, visiting dental officer and a chemist.

our staff
Staff is available 24 hours a day, offering enabling services
as required. The Service User Forum is involved in the recruitment of staff.
All staff receive ongoing training, with support workers trained to NVQ level
3 in care.

transport
The unit has two vehicles, both wheelchair accessible
and holding up to three wheelchairs. Some local taxis can also accommodate wheelchairs.
Local bus services, train and road links are nearby.

shops
There is a small grocery store 50 yards from the unit offering
video hire, off-licence sales and newspapers.
Langney Shopping Centre is half a mile away. The Arndale Shopping Centre in Eastbourne is approximately four miles away. All these amenities
are fully accessible to wheelchair users.

local attractions
Eastbourne has an attractive sea front with Beachy Head
and the South Downs within easy reach. The towns of Brighton, Hastings and Lewes
are close by and there are numerous beauty spots and places of interest to visit
locally. London is an hour and a half away by train.
There is a wide variety of
local pubs, some of which serve food.
In Eastbourne there are three theatres, pubs, discos
and nightclubs. The Cannon Multiplex cinema has six screens,
all of which are fully wheelchair accessible.
Nearby Arlington Stadium offers stock-car racing
and speedway while Eastbourne Marina has a range of shops,
restaurants and bars. Both Bexhill and Eastbourne have ten-pin
bowling complexes. Various health clubs are wheelchair friendly,
to enable use of gym equipment and other facilities.
